  1. A/UX INTERACTIVE TRAINING
  2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  3.  
  4. Please read all the instructions before you begin.
  5.  
  6. Overview
  7. A/UX Interactive Training is an on-demand training environment 
  8. for the A/UX operating system.  With it you can learn a lot 
  9. about A/UX and UNIX fundamentals.  There is also a complete 
  10. Sales and Demonstration system included for Apple and 
  11. reseller salespeople.
  12.  
  13. The training should be used in the A/UX operating system to 
  14. take full advantage of commands and capabilities.  You 
  15. can also “browse” through the training on any Macintosh 
  16. system, but you won’t be able to execute UNIX commands 
  17. unless you are running A/UX.
  18.  
  19. The training materials are designed so that you need only 
  20. one copy for all the users on your A/UX system.  You don’t 
  21. need to make additional copies in individual user directories.
  22.  
  23. Using the training
  24. Once installed in A/UX, the training is accessible in 
  25. two ways:
  26.  
  27. •    By selecting “A/UX Training” from the Apple menu
  28. •    By double-clicking the AUX Training icon (a HyperCard stack).
  29.  
  30. You should install the training on a hard disk.  It runs very 
  31. slowly from a CD or file server.
  32.  
  33. CD Installation:
  34. Make sure your CD drive is connected and your compact disk is 
  35. installed.  You will see the icon when you log in.
  36.  
  37. File server installation:
  38. After you log into A/UX, use the Chooser to locate your file 
  39. server.  Then locate the A/UX Interactive Training folder, open 
  40. it up, and follow the instructions.

  43. Refer to the instructions included in the AppleLink training 
  44. folder.

  47. A/UX INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  48.  
  49. Step 1
  50. Log in to your A/UX System as “root”.
  51.  
  52. If you don’t know how to log in as root, or if you don’t know 
  53. the root password, ask your system administrator.  If you have 
  54. just installed A/UX and have not yet set the root password, 
  55. then there isn’t one and you can log in as root with no 
  56. password.
  57.  
  58. If you are installing from a file server, use the Chooser to 
  59. locate the appropriate server.  If installing from CD, you 
  60. should see the CD icon on your A/UX desktop.  In either case, 
  61. locate the folder “AUX Interactive Training”.
  62.  
  63. You must be logged in as root to complete the installation.
  64.  
  65. Step 2
  66. Copy the AUX Interactive Training folder to your root (/) A/UX 
  67. partition, then open the folder by double-clicking.
  68.  
  69. Installation can take a few minutes if you are installing from 
  70. a file server — there is nearly 8 megabytes of material in this 
  71. folder.  To save disk space after installation, you will remove 
  72. this folder from your A/UX disk.

  74. Step 3
  75. Move the HyperTools folder to your A/UX “usr” folder.
  76.  
  77. The HyperTools folder contains the actual training software.  
  78. Simply drag the HyperTools folder into the A/UX “usr” folder.  
  79. Once installed in “usr”, you won’t need to access the HyperTools 
  80. folder to use the training.  (It contains about 50 files).
  81.  
  82. NOTE:  Do not move the HyperTools folder to your “users” folder 
  83. — don’t get the names confused!

  86. Step 4
  87. Copy the AITLauncher application to your A/UX System Folder.
  88.  
  89. Drag the AITLauncher application to your A/UX System Folder.  
  90. Your A/UX System Folder is located in “/:mac:sys:System Folder”.
  91. To locate your A/UX System Folder:
  92.  
  93. •    double-click the “mac” folder, then
  94. •    double-click the “sys” folder
  95.  
  96. and you should see the “System Folder.”  When done, close the 
  97. “sys” and “mac” folders.
  98.  
  99. This application works in conjunction with the AUX Training DA, 
  100. allowing you to access the training as a DA by selecting “A/UX 
  101. Training” from the Apple menu.
  102.  
  103. If user accounts have individual System Folders, place a copy 
  104. of AITLauncher in each one.  Make sure each copy is named 
  105. “AITLauncher”.  User account folders are located inside the 
  106. A/UX “users” folder.

  109. Step 5
  110. Install the AUX Training Desk Accessory into your A/UX System 
  111. file.
  112.  
  113. Double-click the suitcase file, then install the DA into your 
  114. A/UX System file.  If you need to search for the A/UX System 
  115. file, follow this path:
  116.  
  117.     mac
  118.        sys
  119.           System Folder
  120.               System   <— This is your A/UX System file.
  121.  
  122. If there are individual System Folders for user accounts, repeat
  123. this step for each of the user accounts.

  126. Step 6
  127. Install the Training Fonts into your A/UX System File.
  128.  
  129. Follow the same path as you used to install the A/UX 
  130. Training DA.  
  131.  
  132. If necessary, repeat this step for those user accounts that 
  133. have individual System files.

  136. Step 7
  137. If necessary, install the HyperCard fonts with the Font/DA 
  138. Mover.
  139.  
  140. HyperCard and a Home stack are included inside your HyperTools 
  141. folder.  If you have not already installed HyperCard fonts, do 
  142. so now.  Follow the same path as before to locate your A/UX 
  143. System file.  
  144.  
  145. Repeat this step for those user accounts that have individual 
  146. System files.
  147.

  149. Step 8
  150. Copy the AUX Training stack to your root (/) partition.
  151.  
  152. This stack performs two jobs:  It initializes the the training 
  153. software files for use in A/UX, and subsequently provides an 
  154. alternate way to launch the training.  You can use this stack 
  155. or the A/UX Training desk accessory at your discretion.  
  156. If you use the stack,  you can place copies anywhere in your 
  157. A/UX file system.  You should keep a copy in your Home directory and in individual user directories.

  159. Please don’t launch this stack until you have completed 
  160. Step 9.

  163. Step 9:
  164. Once everything is installed, close the AUX Interactive 
  165. Training folder and remove it from your A/UX partition.
  166.  
  167. This step is necessary to save disk space and to avoid having 
  168. duplicate copies of the HyperTools folder.  Don’t worry about 
  169. keeping a “backup” copy of the HyperTools training — it’s 
  170. already “backed up” for you on the CD, File Server, or AppleLink
  171. (wherever you got it).
  172.  
  173. Remove the folder by dragging it to the trash.  When asked 
  174. whether you want to remove applications, answer “yes.”  You may 
  175. want to keep a copy of the installation guide for future 
  176. reference.  In any case, make sure you do not have duplicate 
  177. copies of the HyperTools folder on your A/UX system.  There 
  178. should be only one copy inside your “usr” folder.

  181. Step 10
  182. Initialize the training system by double-clicking the AUX 
  183. Training stack.
  184.  
  185. Initialization takes about a minute.  When completed, you will 
  186. enter the A/UX Interactive Training System.  At this point you 
  187. can go through the training, or quit and complete the rest of 
  188. the installation steps.

  190. Step 11
  191. (Optional) Place a copy of the AUX Training stack in individual 
  192. user directories.
  193.  
  194. If you have installed the AITLauncher and DA files properly, 
  195. individual users will be able to select “A/UX Training” from 
  196. their Apple menu to run the training.  The AUX Training stack 
  197. provides an alternate way to enter the training system.

  200. Step 12
  201. Log out and log back in again; you should now be able to use 
  202. the training.
  203.  
  204. To use the training:
  205.  
  206. •    Select “A/UX Training” from the Apple menu, or
  207. •    Double-click the AUX Training stack.
  208.  
  209. If you’ve done the installation properly, any user on the 
  210. system should be able to launch the training.
  211.

  213. If the training doesn’t launch —
  214.  
  215. •    Make sure the “HyperTools” folder is inside your “usr” 
  216. folder and is not nested inside another folder.
  217.  
  218. •    Make sure there is only one HyperTools folder on your 
  219. A/UX system.
  220.  
  221. •    Check whether the user account has a System Folder.  If it 
  222. does, make sure the AITLauncher and AUX Training DA have been 
  223. properly installed in the user account.

  225. •    Log out and log in as root again, then double-check all the 
  226. installation steps.
  227.

  232. MACINTOSH SYSTEM INSTALLATION
  233.  
  234. You cannot use the A/UX Training desk accessory in the Macintosh
  235. Operating System, because the AITLauncher application requires 
  236. that the HyperTools folder be located inside the UNIX “usr” 
  237. folder.  But you can “browse” through the training on any 
  238. ordinary Macintosh computer.  To use the training in an ordinary
  239. Macintosh system:

  241. Step 1
  242. Copy the A/UX Interactive Training folder to your Hard Disk.  
  243. Remove the AITLauncher and AUX Training DA files.
  244.  
  245. Step 2
  246. Install the Training and HyperCard font files.
  247.  
  248. Once installed, you can drag the files to the trash to save 
  249. some disk space.

  251. Step 3
  252. To use the training, double-click the AUX Training stack.
  253.  
  254. Note:  This stack must be located at the same level as the 
  255. HyperTools folder, or it will not launch the training.  
  256. Alternatively, you can open the HyperTools directory and 
  257. double-click the “HyperTools Home” stack.

  259. Need help installing A/UX?
  260.  
  261. You can copy the stack “Install A_UX” to any Macintosh computer 
  262. and review the installation procedure.  The stack can also print 
  263. a complete (and brief) installation guide.  Before dragging the 
  264. entire AUX Interactive Training folder to your hard disk:
  265.  
  266. •    Open the AUX Interactive Training folder (on CD or file 
  267. server)
  268. •    Open the HyperTools folder
  269. •    Drag the “Install A_UX” stack to your own system
  270.  
  271. The “Install A_UX” stack covers installation on Apple and other 
  272. (third-party) disk drives.  You don’t need to be running under 
  273. A/UX to get full use out of this stack.
